How many Call of Duty Games are there?

Call of Duty continued to be a fan favourite since it burst onto our screens in 2003. But what has kept it being so popular for over 20 years? The many iterations, mini releases and expansions they have produced to keep people entertained. Although, all these releases have made it difficult to keep track of how many Call of Duty games there actually are. This article will answer exactly that, as well as explore all the games throughout the years so you can find the right one for you.

Firstly, what is Call of Duty?

Call of Duty is a first-person shooting game that has taken over the world. Thanks to its intricate storylines, intense combat and immersive experience, Call of Duty remains popular amongst gamers since it’s launch in 2003. You can take on a solo mission or play with friends using the multi-player feature in order to be the last team standing. But it’s not just it’s enthralling game play and multi-player options that has kept people playing for over 20 years, but its many new releases and iterations.

How many Call of Duty Games are there?

There are 22 main Call of Duty games. However, if you include all the mobile versions, spin offs, expansions and smaller releases, the total is around 50 plus. Interestingly, most of these games are still available to play and have yet to be deactivated. This means fans have a pleather of content to sink their teeth into, which is why they continue to play again and again without getting bored.

The main iterations include:

  • Call of Duty: The game that started it all. Launched in 2003, the original game was set in WWII, where players joined a squad to understand the role of allies in warfare. Following its success, Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 3 were released in subsequent years.

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – As the name suggests, this game is set in modern times, moving away from the WWII landscape. Launched in 2007, this iteration became quickly popular due to the likes of ‘kill streaks’ and ‘level upgrades’ where players were rewarded with additional weapons and abilities when they killed their enemies and advanced through the game. Modern Warfare 2 and 3 were released in later years, with speculation there could even be a fourth game to continue the storyline.

  • Black ops: First released in 2010, players have now landed in the Cold War. They must work together as a team to complete the objectives and unlock rewards to defeat their enemies. There are currently 5 versions of this game, with a new iteration set to release in 2024.

  • Ghosts: Standalone instalment launched in 2013. Set after a catastrophic event destroys America, the remaining forces or the ‘ghosts’ battle the new global superpower for survival.

  • Vanguard: 2021 first-person shooter game. The narrative takes players back to WWII where they have to work together with soldiers from across the globe to develop the special forces we know today. In Vanguard, the three game modes are campaign, multi-player and zombies.

Alongside these main titles, there were a number of other smaller games released such as Call of Duty: Finest Hour (2004) and Call of Duty: Roads to Victory (2007). There are also several mobile versions and games released for specific platforms and devices. Therefore, it’s best to do your research into all the Call of Duty games available and on what device so that you can find the right game for you.

Looking to the future

Despite already having around 50 iterations of the game in their portfolio, the Call of Duty franchise shows no signs of slowing down. Their newest game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is already in beta, and is set to release in the latter months of 2024. There are also rumours that they will expand into newer technologies such as releasing a game for the Nintendo Switch. Their ability to diversify and continue to release new campaigns and storylines is just one of the many reasons why Call of Duty has been a popular game for over 20 years and will continue to be played for years to come.
