G2 is the next big player on the eSports scene, growing even stronger with the addition of a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds ('PUBG') squad. Given the G2 multi-gaming clan already has teams for League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rocket League, and Paladins – and given the current popularity of PUBG – this step is not a huge surprise. G2 Brand Manager Jakub "Lothar" Szygulski describes the reasoning behind the recruitment of a PUBG squad as follows:
"Alongside fun comes the competitive aspect and G2 knew from the beginning that this game will take off. With that in mind we started looking for a team very early on but it took us a while to find the best possible fit for G2—hard working, skilful and hungry for success. I personally can't wait to see our team perform in all the future tournaments but also create content for the organisation and participate in G2 events."
This is the new PUBG team
The G2 squad led by Captain Mark ‘Phantasy’ Pinney consists of Stephen ‘Stephen’ Phillips, Davin ‘Velan’ Velan and Jack ‘Wack0’ Middleton. Newly signed players 'Velan' and 'Wack0' are two former Overwatch professionals, while 'Phantasy' and 'Stephen' gained their first eSports experiences as Call of Duty professionals. A small foretaste of these players' skills can be seen in the public G2 highlights video of player 'wack0' or, of course, via live broadcasts on Twitch. Anyone wanting to see the entire squad in action should tune in to the weekly Auzon Premier League.
G2 only narrowly missed out on qualification for the IEM Oakland PUBG Invitational Tournament, which offers USD 200,000 in prize money. In the high-attendance online qualifier, G2 won a respectable eighth place out of 319 participating teams. 'Pinney', the team captain, is very optimistic about PUBG and his team's future:
"PUBG has grown excessively over recent months and although the competitive aspects of the game are still developing we are thrilled to be representing G2 moving forward. Our team consists of highly skilled players who are passionate and motivated to succeed and with support from an organisation that shares the same values as G2 we are very much looking forward to the future."
