Turin, 2 July 2015 - A study commissioned by paysafecard reveals the habits and preferences of Italians when shopping online. 96.4% of Italians would like to use the internet for future purchases.

Italians are using online payment methods with increasing frequency and are interested in new methods - as long as they are secure. This is the result of a study by paysafecard, the European market leader for prepaid online payment systems, which was conducted in Italy among people aged 16 to 70 on their purchasing and payment habits.

96.4% of those who took part expressed intention to shop and pay online in the next 12 months (e. g. online shopping and travel booking). This is an increase in comparison to last year, in which 94.7% of participants had shopped online: 25% of them 6 to 10 times, 24.8% 3 to 5 times and 7.1% more than 30 times. Only 3.2% had not made a purchase online in the previous 12 months and 2.1% have never shopped online. For 48.8% of those asked, the reason for this is a preference for traditional shops. However, 37.2% said that there had simply been no occasion to do so.

With respect to the future payment method, half of those asked prefer cash (50.1%), followed by PayPal (47.9%), credit cards (39.7%), prepaid cards (23.5%), debit cards (15.5%), and, in last place, paying by smartphone via text message or app (12.8%). The matter of security is relevant to all payment methods, for both cash payments (22.4% fear wallet theft) and paying online (23.4% fear credit card data theft and 17.9% the abuse of passwords and online payment systems such as PayPal).

In response to the question of what effect improved data security would have on their online shopping, 64.9% of those asked replied that they would shop "more frequently" or "a lot more frequently". In contrast, 32.3% said that it would not affect their shopping behaviour. The risk of internet fraud is estimated as "medium" by 34.5% of Italians and "high" by 44.4%. However, "only" 12.4% were victims of attempted fraud when paying online, whereas 51.9% had heard about it through the media, but have not experienced it directly or indirectly (such as friends or acquaintances). The greatest fear is the abuse of personal information (46.5%), whereby 49.3% would like stricter laws governing the protection of privacy online. Until then, 58.2% declare that they will be "very careful" about paying online.
