Vienna, 10 December 2015 – paysafecard, the global market leader in prepaid online payment methods based in Vienna and member of Paysafe Group Plc, recently conducted a Europe-wide study of shopping and payment habits among internet users. The online survey of 3,500 people in seven countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, Poland) revealed surprising results.

Austrian men are digital “Big Spenders”
With a spending of exactly 242.19 EUR per month, Austrian men are exceptionally generous on even an international level. This took into account all kinds of online purchases, including games, travel bookings and downloads. Women are, with 167.10 EUR per month, considerably more reserved in their online spending.
Among all countries surveyed, the results show that men spend an average of 174 EUR a month and women 109 EUR. The Swiss are particularly generous: There the total is 329 EUR a month for online spending. The Austrians spend around 205 EUR. The German average od 155 EUR follows at a respectable distance in third place, followed by the Italians with 138 EUR. The French (120 EUR), Polish (91 EUR) and the Spanish (90 EUR) are more frugal with their online shopping.
Age too has an influence on the desire for online shopping: the older the user, the more generous he or she is. The average purchasing volumes in the seven countries is for 16-19 year olds 52 EUR, rising with 60+ users to 173 EUR. It is not that surprising that seniors tend to be wealthier than their grandchildren, but that they form the highest spending group of online shoppers is.
Everyone wants data privacy — particularly women
The main concern of all asked is data security, particularly with regard to online payments. 87% of those asked in the countries polled said that data privacy is “very important”. Particularly Austrians (92%) and French and Spanish users (89%) place great importance on it. With 95% agreement, female Austrians represent the highest value across Europe. Agreement with this statement is not under 84% in any country. While 82% of 20-29 year olds find data privacy “very important”, it is 60+ users (with 90%) who are one of the most security conscious age groups.
The remaining demands on online shopping and payments reveal country-specific differences. 75% of Spaniards find free payment solutions (like paysafecard) “very important”, while this aspect concerns only 58% of Swiss. In Poland it is the speed of payment transactions which is “very important” for 67%. Here too (with only 41%) Swiss users are the most patient. Online spending control is, in turn, “very important” for two thirds of Austrians, while only 42% of Italians agree.
